The hardest thing about tutoring a child is that their concerns didn’t start yesterday. Maths & English are topics that you build on from day to day, something learned yesterday you build on today and so on.
So the first thing a professional tutor needs to ascertain is “where did your child’s concerns start”? It’s absolutely no use guessing or proceeding with current work as a number of agencies do. They hire university students and send them out on home visits, often quite unprepared and all they can do is attempt to assist with their homework.
If the child does not have an understanding of the previous concepts from earlier years or the building blocks have not been explained correctly you might as well spend the money and take the family out to dinner, because very little is going to be gained.
Some Organisations put children in small groups to teach or review topics. This is satisfactory if the children all come from the one school and all of the children have covered all the same topics being discussed, most haven’t because they all come from different schools and are studying different topics at their school.
